Overview
This part is to let you have an idea about how to read tyre sizes because it’s very important. Tyre size is mentioned on the tyre sidewall along with the brand name. As seen in figure 1.

Figure1: Tyre size illustration
There are basically two important Nomenclature practices as follows
- Metric sizing
- Floating sizing
- Metric sizing
Let consider the following metric sizing as show in figure 2 below

Figure2: Metric sizing
Where:
- 195 represent Selection width or tyre width as shown in figure3 below

Figure3: Tire width representation
Tyre width affects the vehicles handling, cornering, traction, fuel efficiency and Steering response
- 55% represent the aspect ratio or Tyre height as shown in figure4 below

Figure 4: Tyre height representation
Aspect ratio affect: Higher aspect ratio provide higher comfort and lower aspect ratio provides better vehicle handling
- R represent construction type and the R represent the radial construction.
Radial construction effect such as Ride quality, fuel efficiency, vibration and load capacity
- 16 represent the Rim diameter as shown in figure 5 and it’s measure in inches

Figure 5: Rim diameter representation
Rim diameter affects: Vehicle performance, fuel efficiency, Noise level and confort
- 87 represent load index which indicate the load carrying capacity of tyre as shown in figure 6

Figure 6: Load index representation
Load index affects: Wear rate, stability and control, cornering
- V represent speed rating which indicate the maximum speed capacity of tyre as shown in figure 7

Figure 7: Speed capacity
Speed rating affects: Steering response, Stability and control, Blowout
2. Floatation sizing
Consider the figure8 below

Figure 8: Flooting tire sizing
Where
- 25 indicate the outer diameter and it’s measure in inches as shown in figure9 below

Figure 9: Outer diameter representation
Outer diameter affects handling, ground clearance and performance
- 8 represent the selection width or tyre width and it’s measure in inches as shown in figure10 below

Figure 10: Tyre width
Selection width affects: traction, fuel efficiency and steering response
- 12 represent the rim diameter and it’s measure in inches as shown in figure 11

Figure 11: Rim diameter representation
Rim diameter affects: Performance, Noise level and comfort
There are also some important aspects
a)Direction indicator
There is an arrow which indicate the direction of rotation as shown below

b)Ply rating/ star rating
The ply rating is the actual number of casing plies (layers} used in construction of tire that is the higher the ply rating, more is the strength
Star ration ply rating equivalency
** star rating equivalent to 4 ply rating
*** star rating equivalent to 6 ply rating
Most popular sizes
From the general introduction, and from the research that we did we can clearly say that Metric sizing is the best tire sizing and the most popular one that we already saw.
